How to ride LATS   <-Link to .PDF                      borrowed from the Lawton Constitution

Students at Lawton's secondary schools will be able to ride LATS buses free of charge in a pilot program next semester.

The Lawton Board of Education Monday approved an agreement with the Lawton Area Transit System that will allow students from Lawton, Eisenhower and MacArthur high schools and Central, Eisenhower, MacArthur and Tomlinson middle schools to ride not only to and from school, but everywhere the buses go, both on school days and on weekends.

Superintendent Tom Deighan said the program would allow more students to participate in sports and extracurricular activities and allow them to participate in other programs, such as extended library hours.

"It's one of the most exciting things we've ever considered," he said.

It also could reduce stress on the regular school bus routes, he said. For example, some high school students who miss a school bus now go to the middle schools (whose buses run later) and crowd those buses.

He said LATS has conferred with other transit systems involved in such programs and has estimated what ridership will be. After next semester LATS will have firm statistics on ridership and the program can be reviewed.
