2012 Veterans of the Foreign Wars “Voice of Democracy” Speech Contest

Congratulations to junior Ellen Halverson.  She is the district winner of the 2012 Veterans of the Foreign Wars “Voice of Democracy” Speech Contest.  Taking second place was junior Elisha Lo.  In the earlier local competition, junior Zoie Timothy was also a winner.  The theme of the speech was “Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military?”  Ellen’s speech, recorded on a CD, now advances to the state competition.  All three students will be honored at a VFW luncheon in the coming weeks.

2012 La Sill Optimist Club’s Essay Contest

Congratulations to junior Tanya Salyers-Spangler.  She is the first-place winner in the 2012 La Sill Optimist Club’s Essay Contest.   Taking second and third place, respectively, were juniors Lee Kantowski and Ellen Halverson.   The theme was “How My Positive Outlook Benefits My Community.”  All three students will be receive awards from the La Sill Optimist Club in the near future.

Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition

Congratulations to junior Denise Burns.   She is the winner of the regional Poetry Out Loud Competition which took place at the Lawton Public Library on Saturday, 18 February.  Denise now moves on to the state Poetry Out Loud Competition, which will be held at the Lyric at The Plaza in Oklahoma City on Saturday, 3 March.  There will be six finalists, and the winner will represent Oklahoma at the national Poetry Out Loud Competition in Washington, DC.

Oklahoma Bar Association’s 2012 Law Day Creative Free For All

Congratulations to freshman Julie Drago.  She is the ninth-grade winner in the statewide Oklahoma Bar Association’s 2012 Law Day Creative Free For All.   Taking second place was freshman Shawn Horne.  Julie and Shawn will both receive cash prizes.  Freshmen taking Honorable Mention were Charmaine Arongay, Tiara Amantine, Megan Rawls, and Matthew Herrick.  Winning Honorable Mention in the tenth- and eleventh-grade levels were sophomores Dominick Haber and Jeein Yoon and juniors Rachel Lowe and Molly Dodson.  The theme of the contest was “No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom.”

LHS Poetry Out Loud Competition

Congratulations to junior Denise Burns.  She is the 2012 Lawton High Poetry Out Loud champion.  She bested twenty-two other competitors from all grade levels.  Denise had taken second place each of the past two years.  The competition—held at Central Middle School on 13 January—took two and a half hours to complete, as each competitor had to perform two poems.  Denise will now add a third poem and move on to the regional competition at the Lawton Public Library in mid-February.  Coming in second through fifth, respectively, were junior Lee Kantowski,
junior Daniel Pae, senior Alicia Caddy, and junior Molly Dodson.
